NOTE:
After 2004’s beautifully mournful debut `Songs For My Funeral’`, `Nostalgia 77`’s new offering, '`The Garden`' is set for release in late March on Tru Thoughts throughout Europe, and `Ubiquity Records` in the USA. This LP sees multi- instrumentalist/producer Nostalgia 77 explores his love of 60's and 70's jazz, soul, funk and Afrobeat sounds; decidedly moving away from hip-hop production towards investigating his love of spiritual jazz styles. Having worked with some fine musicians, `The Garden'`fuses live instrumentation with computer programming, forging a unique and highly accomplished sound.
Nostalgia 77 first burst onto the scene with his heavy, new funk based sound in 2002. Unleashing a string of club friendly tracks on Tru Thoughts’ hugely influential 7Sevens imprint, he then followed suit with his seminal debut LP entitled ‘Songs For My Funeral’ in February 2004. Swiftly moving away from the distinctive raw funk of his previous singles, ‘Songs For My Funeral’ saw him branching out to explore a more downtempo and jazz infused style. The success of the album thus encouraged him to progress with this approach for his second album offering, ‘The Garden’. A style which he describes as “a combination of soul and jazz composition with computer based production techniques”.
“Coming from producing hip hop style beats I'd always heard snippets of jazz tracks I loved. This LP was a way of doing some jazz tracks which did what I wanted from start to finish.”
Nostalgia 77 is aiming for an edgy sound whilst continuing to search for a more personal expression. His influences include free and spiritual jazz ; Sun Ra, Coltrane, AACM , Don Cherry, Ornett Coleman , Archie Shepp, Mingus, Max Roach, British Jazz musicians like Keith Tippet and Graham Collier, as well as 60's funk and soul and Afro sounds.
