bio: Salsoul Records was founded in 1974 by the three Cayre Brothers - Joe, Ken & Stanley. The name Salsoul was a blending of Salsa and Soul. Salsoul Records was the first label to release 12" Disco Mix singles to the public, the first commercial 12" Disco Mix single was: Double Exposure's "Ten Percent".
The Salsoul label was magical and causes listeners and djs to proclaim it as the funkiet and sexiest music ever produced. Bobbie and Stevie proclaimed ,"The name Salsoul should be in the dictionary along side of Motown. What this label has done for dance music throughout the years is beyond belief. The catalogue is a timeless masterpiece."
The Salsoul Orchestra, the hallmark of the label, produced a big and unique sound, with lush, cascading melodies and enormous, entrancing breaks. The Salsoul Orchestra added new excitement, new life and impetus to the work and dance of many. Until this very day, the Salsoul name, label and trademark epitomize the best of dance music and is heralded by many djs. David Morales remembers "dancing to these records back in the day at the Loft and the Garage(Paradise)."
Salsoul Records began cooperation to other labels through distribution deals, most notable the 'Gold Mine' managed by Norman Harris. Norman helped, along with Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, to build Philadelphia International, and he introduced the first Gold Mine artist Loleatta Holloway with her powerful, seductive voice. Loleatta is the diva behind such hits as "Hit & Run", "Love Sensation", "Dreamin'", and "Runaway". Another one of Salsoul's success stories was acclaimed Philadelphia writer/producer Bunny Sigler and his band Instant Funk. Taking Instant Funk to Salsoul Records was the best move Bunny made. "I was playing Instant Funk's 'I Got My Mind Made Up', and the Record Companies were turning it down. But Salsoul Records liked my ideas and I'm pleased they were rewarded with a gold plaque for that record."
Later the label went on to release hits by Aurra, Inner Life feat. Jocelyn Brown, Charo, Skyy and many others who scored numerous gold and platinum LPs and a lot of ..1 dance and R'n'B singles. Salsoul Records has one of the most successful runs in music history.
